ATFP welcomes the appointment of former Senator George Mitchell as Middle East Special Envoy, and views this appointment as a clear signal of President Obama's strong commitment to an early, energetic engagement in peace making in the Middle East.
The President's remarks during the news conference announcing the appointment set forth robust policies for bringing peace to the Middle East. In particular, ATFP is encouraged by the focus on achieving a two-state solution, with Palestine and Israel living side by side in peace and security, and on continuing the efforts to improve the economy and security of the Palestinian people. The President's pledge to work with the international community and the Palestinian Authority to reconstruct Gaza reignites hope for a better life for the people of Gaza. ATFP echoes the President's demand for Hamas to abandon violence and engage in the peace process for the benefit of the Palestinian people.
In welcoming the announcement, ATFP President Dr. Ziad Asali said: "Senator Mitchell's experience, credibility and gravitas, coupled with vigorous policies, create an opportunity for bringing peace and prosperity to the Middle East, and for breaking the cycle of violence and stemming the tide of extremism. Armed with formidable and proven negotiating skills, Senator Mitchell will need the full and unqualified support of President Obama and Secretary Clinton to finally bring this conflict to a final and decisive end."
ATFP looks forward to working with Senator Mitchell towards ending the Palestinian tragedy by resolving the Arab Israeli conflict and furthering US national interest in the region
