The uprising in Egypt has created turmoil for Israeli and Palestinian leaders, who have their own complicated relationships with the Mubarak regime. For Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, President Hosni Mubarak has been his strongest ally in the region. At the same time, Mr. Mubarak has been a firm ally of the Palestinian Authority and a staunch supporter of the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Egypt has also tried to broker reconciliation talks (so far, unsuccessfully) between Fatah, the party governing the West Bank, and Hamas, which controls Gaza.

The Arab youth have lost their fear, and marched in defiance of their leadership in search of bread, freedom and dignity. They have forged new political realities that are fraught with possibilities and promise as well as dangers and peril. One thing is clear-the status quo has come to an end. Arab unity, long proclaimed dead and buried, has re-emerged in a political contagion which is spreading among the Arabs whose regimes (with the exception of the Gulf) are twisting in the winds.

The group of some 150 people included representatives from Morocco, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq, as well as rabbis and Christian representatives.

AL postpones Jerusalem conference due to unrest in Arab countries

The Arab League (AL) decided Tuesday to postpone the "Jerusalem Conference" scheduled in Doha, Qatar early February to indefinite date due to the serious situation in Egypt and some other Arab countries. Mohammed Soubie, assistant of the AL general secretary, announced the postpone in a statement after a series of consultations between Qatar, the hosting country and the AL.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, last week ordered his cabinet to refrain from commenting publicly on the unfolding events in Egypt. But his statements to his government's ministers yesterday, the first spoken openly by an Israeli official about the situation in Egypt since the protests began on January 25, indicated his anxiety.
