The tray is made of several layers of glass and glass shards (very thin pieces a fraction of a millimeter thick) and incorporates a piece of white glass that has been carefully worked with a band saw to create scrolling lines of a pen. The colored shards are carefully broken on clear glass then placed to suggest pieces coming together, as writing brings people together. The pieces of glass are fused at nearly 1,500 degrees F, then cooled and formed on fiber paper with little glass bead feet.
