Internationally exhibited Egyptian artist Hussein El Gebaly, (b. 1932) President of the National Association of Contemporary Egyptian Graphic Arts, introduced printmaking as a contemporary art in Egypt through his work and teaching at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo.
Lithograph, “Abstract Calligraphy”, 1982, is a striking example of the merging of the Islamic, in the calligraphy, with the Pharaonic pyramidal forms introduced into Egyptian artists’ lexicons during that period. El Gebaly’s work was exhibited at the Smithsonian in the late 1970s.
