The Two-State Solution on Its Deathbed
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Atlantic by Robert Wright - (Opinion) April 5, 2012 - 12:00am Peter Beinart's book The Crisis of Zionism has started debates about various things, including whether it's too late for a two-state solution. Beinart's view is that it's not quite too late but is so close to that as to warrant drastic measures--like a boycott of products made in West Bank settlements (or "Zionist BDS," as distinguished from full-on BDS). My view is if anything more pessimistic. But apparently I should cheer up: After I last expressed that pessimism, fellow Atlantic contributor Zvika Krieger explained that it rests on confusion. |
A Middle East Twofer
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The New York Times by Thomas L. Friedman - (Opinion) April 4, 2012 - 12:00am There is so much going on in the Middle East today, it’s impossible to capture it all with one opinion. So here are two for the price of one. |
Of bondage and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jerusalem Post by Jonathan Rosen - (Opinion) April 4, 2012 - 12:00am After 130 years of Zionist activism, 64 years of statehood, 45 years of occupation, more than 20 years of failed negotiations with the PLO and seven years of disengagement; after seven wars, two intifadas, the rise of Hamas and the specter of anti-Semitic Islamist sentiment sweeping the region, many Israelis have come to the conclusion that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is simply intractable. |
Israeli, Palestinian officials hold secret meeting amid stall in peace talks
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Barak Ravid - April 3, 2012 - 12:00am Peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority are at a complete standstill, with relations between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reaching a newfound low. And yet, contacts have been held behind the scenes in the last two weeks between officials from both Jerusalem and Ramallah, over the missive Abbas plans to send Netanyahu in the coming days. |
Palestinian responsibility
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jerusalem Post (Editorial) April 3, 2012 - 12:00am The hypocrisy was mind-boggling. The same week that the Palestinian Authority announced the introduction of a new award to honor press freedom, it launched a crackdown on Palestinian journalists to intimidate them and stifle their voices. |
Mofaz's Kadima win signals end of the land for peace era
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Moshe Arens - (Opinion) April 2, 2012 - 12:00am Of course Shaul Mofaz won, and Tzipi Livni lost. But there was much more to the Kadima primary race than that. It was the "two-state solution," at the forefront of Israeli political discourse for a number of years, that lost. It was the offer of more concessions to the Palestinians, whose most prominent advocate was former Kadima chairwoman, MK Tzipi Livni, that went down in defeat. |
Safer Side by Side: Why Israel Needs Palestine
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Daily Beast by Hussein Ibish - (Opinion) April 2, 2012 - 12:00am Benny Begin, a member of Prime Minister Netanuyahu's inner cabinet, recently dismissed the idea of the creation of a viable Palestinian state, claiming it would be an unbearable security threat to Israel. He added that Netanuyahu's 2009 Bar-Ilan speech, which seemingly endorsed the two-state goal, was aimed exclusively at foreign audiences but that Palestinian statehood "was not brought up for discussion in the government, nor will it be discussed." "This is not the government's position," he stated bluntly. All the evidence suggests he's correct. |

New political opportunities?
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Bitterlemons by Amnon Lord - (Opinion) March 29, 2012 - 12:00am The disintegration of the Palestinian Authority--ultimately, an act by the Palestinian leadership to dismantle the PA--is certainly not in the interest of Israel, for quite a few reasons. It is also not in the interest of the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian leadership, whether Fateh or Hamas. Here are some thoughts as to the diverse directions such a development might take. |
Israel’s Top Court vs. Outposts
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The New York Times (Editorial) March 27, 2012 - 12:00am Israel’s Supreme Court made an important contribution to justice and kept alive hope for a two-state solution with the Palestinians, when it ruled this week that Migron, an illegal outpost built by Israeli settlers, must be dismantled by Aug. 1. Now it is up to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to comply promptly, while making clear to the settlers that violent resistance will not be tolerated. |
