It's not normal

It is difficult to persuade a person who feels happy that he is in fact depressed and despondent. Why should he believe it? With regard to everything about the occupation, the citizens of Israel feel fine. They brush off arguments about the effect it has on morals, about the demographic problem, the economic damage and the undermining of our international relations. Their apathy does not stem only from "proof" that Israel must not budge from the position in which it is entrenched, because of the failure of the diplomatic process and changes in the Arab world.

Eyesight for Israel’s blind
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jordan Times

To find a glimmer of hope on the Israel-Palestine question has become difficult, if not impossible. Most Israelis now believe that a peaceful solution will not come in their generation. As for the Palestinians, the political stalemate, and ongoing Israeli occupation, has led to radicalisation: if they cannot have “something”, they want it all.

Nuclear-free Mideast
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jordan Times
by George S. Hishmeh - (Opinion) September 6, 2012 - 12:00am

It may have been coincidental that The Washington Post came out with a forceful column very critical of US silence about Israel’s nuclear arsenal as it assists the Tel Aviv government in its conflict with Iran over its alleged potential for nuclear weapons.

A lynch could happen in the bubble of Tel Aviv
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz
by Ithmar Handelman-Smith - (Analysis) September 6, 2012 - 12:00am

It is easy for Tel Avivians to file the attempted lynch in Zion Square, in which dozens of Jewish youths attacked three Palestinians in broad daylight, almost killing one, under the category of “that will never happen here." That filing tag has become worn out from overuse, but it is still there, trying to do its job. And what is its job? Autosuggestion.

ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Associated Press
September 5, 2012 - 12:00am

Israel's prime minister has angrily cut short a key gathering of top security officials, accusing an unnamed participant of leaking details of the sensitive meeting to the media. Netanyahu says the leak occurred after a daylong meeting of his Security Cabinet on Tuesday. The forum was briefed by top security officials about various regional threats.

Is Israel Preparing for Attack on Iran?
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Media Line
by Linda Gradstein - (Opinion) September 5, 2012 - 12:00am

In the past few weeks, the question has morphed from “Should Israel attack Iran to try to stop its nuclear program?” to “When will Israel attack Iran to try to stop its nuclear program?”   Israel seems to be increasing its preparations for that attack. Gas mask distribution has been ramped up, and newspapers are filled with bellicose statements, some of which are directed at Israel’s closest ally, the United States.

More signs signaling Israel will not be attacking Iran soon
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz

If anyone needed further proof that Benjamin Netanyahu has buckled under the pressure and will probably not be giving the order to attack Iran in the next few months, at least not before the U.S. elections, the latest reported IDF appointments seem to supply it.

The PA’s electricity tab
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jerusalem Post
(Editorial) September 5, 2012 - 12:00am

We Israelis love to grumble but on occasion, our gripes aren’t irrational. The spate of price hikes that recently hit us from all directions may be unavoidable due to factors outside anyone’s direct control but they hurt nonetheless. Electricity charges offer a cogent case in point.

A not so happy new year
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Ynetnews
by Nahum Barnea - (Opinion) September 4, 2012 - 12:00am

t is customary for Jews to wish each other a happy new year from the beginning of the month of Elul. It is a nice tradition, and I embrace it every year, including this one. But this year I was confronted with a serious credibility problem: I wish a happy new year, but people refuse to believe me.

Occupation Corrupts Soul of Israel
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jewish Daily Forward
by Leonard Fein - (Opinion) September 3, 2012 - 12:00am

It is tempting to impute retroactive intentionality to yesterday’s events. As Gershom Gorenberg felicitously puts it, we mistakenly assume “that if things turned out a certain way, someone planned it that way.” Looking back now, it may seem a foregone conclusion that Israel’s settlement policy in the West Bank (and in Golan, too) was from the beginning an evil design, intended to encroach on Palestinian rights rather than to solve immediate problems. But the effort to draw a straight line of intentionality from then to now obscures more than it clarifies.
