Troubling questions from Dubai
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz (Editorial) February 18, 2010 - 1:00am If Israel is behind last month's assassination of senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, it may be assumed that anybody who tried to appropriate some of the glory regrets it now. Dubai's police investigation may present the Israeli government and intelligence community with tough questions, even if the government did not take responsibility for the assassination, which the foreign press attributes to the Mossad. What at first seemed like a "clean" operation turned out to be wracked by negligent mishaps. |
Israelis Share Suspicions in Hamas Leader’s Killing
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The New York Times by Isabel Kershner - February 17, 2010 - 1:00am The initial nods, winks and pats on the back here over the assassination last month of a senior Hamas official in Dubai are turning to puzzlement and concern as mounting evidence, including extensive surveillance videos, points to a remarkably clumsy operation many Israelis deem unworthy of their intelligence service, Mossad. |
Positive Views of Israel, Brought to You by Israelis
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The New York Times by Ethan Bronner - February 17, 2010 - 1:00am The Israeli government, deeply worried about the country’s declining international image, began a campaign on Wednesday to turn every Israeli — and ultimately every Jew — into a traveling public relations agent. With a Web site backed by an advertising blitz, the Information and Diaspora Affairs Ministry began issuing Hebrew-language pamphlets to passengers on Israeli airlines and offering coaching courses to groups heading abroad. The message: “Are you fed up with the way we are portrayed around the world? You can change the picture.” |
Training our boys to be bullies
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jerusalem Post by Larry Derfner - (Opinion) February 17, 2010 - 1:00am The main thing that drew me to Israel was that here, you put your life on the line in a great political struggle, unlike in the West, where political struggle is something you talk about from a safe distance. |
Taking credit without responsibility, Israel expects little diplomatic fallout
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The National by Omar Karmi - February 17, 2010 - 1:00am Was it a diplomatic mess or a political success? Israeli opinion about the assassination of Mahmoud al Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel last month swings between both, even as few rule out the possibility of Mossad involvement. The Israeli government is maintaining its standard policy of ambiguity in such cases, neither confirming nor denying involvement, a policy that enables the country to claim “credit” without taking responsibility. |
Cheated: PA trade union head details permit fraud
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Ma'an News Agency February 16, 2010 - 1:00am Thousands of Palestinians hoping to gain work and higher wages in Israel were duped over the last three years by a gang of Israelis and Palestinians selling forged permits, Secretary-General of the Palestinian Trade Union Shahir Sa’d said Tuesday. The scam was routed Sunday when Israeli police detained dozens of alleged gang members. The undercover investigation was carried out over a number of months under Commander Dorit Ben-Meir, the Israeli news site Ynet reported at the time. According to the report, 23 Israelis and 11 Palestinians were involved in the scam. |
The silence of Israel's liberals
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Guardian by Carlo Strenger - (Opinion) February 16, 2010 - 1:00am It is not a pleasant experience to look at Israel's image in the world nowadays, to put it mildly. To the extent the country makes the headlines, it is in the context of the Goldstone report on Operation Cast Lead, the latest outlandish statement of foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman or Israel's continuing occupation of large parts of the West Bank. Israel's negative image is reflected in events such as ambassador Michael Oren being heckled on University of California Irvine campus and deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon apparently being threatened during an appearance at Oxford University. |
Israeli FM: Palestinian government smearing us
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Associated Press by Amy Teibel - February 15, 2010 - 1:00am Israel's foreign minister on Monday accused the Western-backed Palestinian government of spearheading an international smear campaign against Israel and predicted that even if negotiations between the two sides resume, they would fail. Avigdor Lieberman's tough comments could mean new trouble for U.S.-led efforts to restart peace talks, which broke down more than a year ago. U.S. envoy George Mitchell has spent months trying to bring the sides back to the negotiating table, but so far has been unable to break the deadlock. |
Challenge to Israel’s legitimacy
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Arab News by Linda Heard - (Opinion) February 15, 2010 - 1:00am The fact that Israel refuses to play according to international rules is eroding its legitimacy as a state with unofficial membership in the worldwide club of democratic nations. Israel has been somewhat of a “wild child” since its founding in terms of its flouting of international laws and norms but its doting allies have always afforded it unprecedented leeway in light of its tenuous position within a hostile neighborhood as well as a collective sense of holocaust guilt. |
Confronting Settlement Expansion in East Jerusalem
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Middle East Report by Joel Beinin - February 14, 2010 - 1:00am The neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, a 20-minute walk up the hill from the Damascus Gate to the Old City of Jerusalem, has become the focal point of the struggle over the expanding project of Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. |
