Israel's harassment of citizens could ignite uprising, warns Arab politician
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Guardian by David Hearst - July 26, 2010 - 12:00am Israel could ignite a third intifada if it continues to push its 1.2 million Arab citizens into a corner, claims Haneen Zoabi, the Arab member of the Knesset vilified for joining the Gaza aid flotilla. Zoabi, who was branded a traitor for her participation in the Gaza convoy, warned that Israel was playing with fire. "We accepted a democratic, liberal state, we voted for the Knesset. But we are not just an internal issue – we are the litmus test of the whole problem. If Israel does not recognise this, conditions will deteriorate towards a third intifada." |

ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) by Ron Kampeas - July 20, 2010 - 12:00am WASHINGTON (JTA) -- In a continuing bid to transition from campus rabble rousers to more mainstream educators, The David Project has hired a Jewish establishment veteran to guide the pro-Israel campus organization. In recent years The David Project has expanded from its original mission -- confronting what it identified as radically anti-Israel groups on campus -- to educating Jewish students on Israel. Now the hiring of David Bernstein, 43, a 13-year veteran of the American Jewish Committee, as executive director signals a major growing-up for the organization. |
Why Israel keeps moving to the right
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Guardian by Carlo Strenger - July 20, 2010 - 12:00am Israel has been sliding into ever greater isolation in the few last years and this process has accelerated since Binyamin Netanyahu came to power in 2009. The international community is put off by his tactics: whenever the question of Israel's settlement policy comes up, he diverts attention to the Iranian nuclear threat. He argues that the world is facing a situation similar to 1938, and that its reaction is that of Neville Chamberlain, trying to appease Adolf Hitler. |
Endgame
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Noam Sheizaf - July 16, 2010 - 12:00am "The prospects of the negotiations with Mahmoud Abbas do not look promising. President Obama undoubtedly thinks otherwise, but if Abbas speaks for anyone, it's barely half the Palestinians. The chances of anything good coming of this are not great. Another possibility is Jordan. If Jordan were ready to absorb both more territories and more people, things would be much easier and more natural. But Jordan does not agree to this. Therefore, I say that we can look at another option: for Israel to apply its law to Judea and Samaria and grant citizenship to 1.5 million Palestinians." |

Palestinians may soon have to swear loyalty to 'Jewish' state
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Jonathan Lis, Dana Weiler-Polak - July 16, 2010 - 12:00am The cabinet is expected to approve a series of measures on Sunday that would make it harder for Palestinians to acquire permanent residency or citizenship in Israel. The most notable would require Palestinians to declare their loyalty to "a Jewish and democratic state" before being granted Israeli citizenship. The measures will primarily affect Palestinian men and women who marry Israeli citizens and then seek citizenship on the basis of family reunification. |
Tricky Bibi
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Gideon Levy - July 15, 2010 - 12:00am This video should have been banned for broadcast to minors. This video should have been shown in every home in Israel, then sent to Washington and Ramallah. Banned for viewing by children so as not to corrupt them, and distributed around the country and the world so that everyone will know who leads the government of Israel. Israelis need a Gandhi of their own
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Bradley Burston - (Blog) July 14, 2010 - 12:00am The more insoluble a conflict, it seems, the more durable the axioms that help keep a solution at bay. All too often, the problem is not that the axiom is unhelpful or untrue, but that over time it has come, ploughshare into sword, to be adopted by one side or the other as a weapon. So it is, that dyed-in-the-wool anti-Palestinians have long delighted in denouncing the Palestinian movement for having failed to produce a home-grown Mahatma Gandhi or Martin Luther King. |
