RAMALLAH, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian leadership has started lobbying for a United Nations resolution against the building of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, a Palestinian official said Wednesday.
"The regional and international efforts aim at mustering as much as possible support to the draft resolution," said Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian peace negotiator.
"The resolution pushes for a sharper international tone toward Israel's acts that threaten any remaining chances for the two- state solution," he told Xinhua, adding that Arab and Islamic states sponsor the Palestinian efforts to get the needed support.
The draft resolution is supposed to call for an international inquiry into all measures Israel has applied since it occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967.
It will also demand Israel stop settlement building, Erekat said.
Last year, the United States vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories.
Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians stopped in 2010, when Israel resumed settlement building in the West Bank.
