The Hebrew website of the Israeli daily Haartez revealed Thursday a disagreement between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad regarding seeking state recognition from the United Nations in September.

The online journal said European diplomats have met with Palestinian leaders in Ramallah lately and said that a group of Palestinian officials headed by Fayyad are against the move believing that trying to secure a UN recognition may cause more detriment than benefit for the Palestinian cause, while Abbas remains adamant about pushing forward with the initiative.

The online journal said European diplomats recently met with Palestinian leaders in Ramallah. According to the site, a group of Palestinian officials headed by Fayyad are against the move believing that trying to secure UN recognition may be more detrimental than beneficial for the Palestinian cause. Abbas, however, remains adamant about pushing forward with the initiative.

According to the European diplomats, Fayyad has the backing of former prime minister Ahmed Qureia and former foreign minister Nasser al-Qudwa. Haaretz pointed to the significance of al-Qudwa’s position, citing his exceptional experience in dealing with the UN, where he has represented the PLO in the General Assembly.

The report added that the diplomats believe an increasing number of ministers in Fayyad’s government are pressing for the move to be reconsidered. Those opposing the move say it would negatively affect relations with America. US congress recently passed a resolution against a unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state at the UN.
