Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas received Egypt’s conciliation plan and is currently reviewing it, Presidential Spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh said Wednesday.
In a statement published on the official government news website WAFA, Abu Rudeineh said it was expected Abbas would take two days to prepare an official response to the submitted plan, or “vision,” as the statement called it.
In a report from the Egyptian paper Al-Misriyyoun (The Egyptians) on Tuesday leaked information said elections under the Egyptian plan would adopt both proportional representation and constituency systems, but did not say what percentage each would hold in the proposed system. Unity talks on elections broke down with Hamas delegates demanding a 50-50 proportional/constituency divide, and Fatah members, who had initially demanded full proportional representation, only willing to go to 75-25 proportional/constituency.
In the statement the spokesperson expressed Abbas’ appreciation of Egyptian efforts and expressed hope for national reconciliation and an end of internal Palestinian division.
Shortly before receiving the plan Abbas received a delegation of independent businessmen from the Gaza Strip in Ramallah’s presidential headquarters. Reports on the meeting said sides discussed mechanisms to bring the Strip back from economic catastrophe and repairing harm done to civilian life.
