The American Task Force on Palestine (ATFP) notes with deep sadness the passing away yesterday, March 10, of Ambassador Samuel W. Lewis. Amb. Lewis had a long and distinguished career of public service, especially in the American diplomatic corps. He served as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs from 1975–1977, U.S. ambassador to Israel from 1977–1985 and Director of Policy Planning from 1993–1994. He also led the United States Institute of Peace from 1987-1993.

Throughout his career and beyond, Amb. Lewis was not only dedicated to the American national interest, but also to the cause of peace in the Middle East. He was a stalwart supporter of a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians and one of the most ardent advocates of a two-state solution.

ATFP President Ziad Asali said, "We have lost a great friend, a brilliant analyst, a distinguished diplomat and a leader in the cause for peace. I will miss Sam's kindness and good counsel deeply. And we extend our condolences to his family and friends."
